“Functions of the type-B cytokinin response regulators in plant growth and development”

Cytokinins regulate many aspects of plant growth and development, including cell proliferation, shoot and root architecture, seed yield, senescence, and stress responses. How a signaling molecule mediates such a diverse array of outputs and how these response pathways are integrated with other inputs remains a fundamental question in plant biology. The main focus of our studies is on the type-B response regulators (RRs), which mediate the primary transcriptional response to cytokinin. To this end, we have performed functional analyses on the type-B RRs in Arabidopsis and rice, results from these studies pointing to novel as well as conserved roles for type-B RRs in the growth and development of monocots as compared to dicots. We have also explored the type-B RR transcriptional network and mechanisms by which cytokinin interacts with auxin and ethylene to control root growth. Results from our analyses shed light on the physiological role of the type-B RRs in regulating the cytokinin response, the mechanism of type-B RR activation, and the basis by which cytokinin regulates diverse aspects of growth and development.
