"Working on demand: how does TORC orchestrate growth requirements?"

As sessile organisms, plants have a great plasticity to adapt to fluctuating environmental conditions adjusting to their growth and developmental demands. The Target of Rapamycin (TOR) pathway has emerged as a central hub in this network, integrating metabolic signals, energy status and hormones to a wide range of growth-mediated processes. Although a wealth of studies has pinpointed a link between TOR and metabolism, little is known about its mode-of-action in fine-tuning metabolic homeostasis to promote biosynthetic growth. Our group is particularly interested in understanding how this pathway adjusts carbon partitioning accordingly to the diel and photoperiod changes to optimize growth. Latest results on a potential role of TOR in controlling starch turnover and sugar sensing will be discussed.
