"Integration and specificity in signal transduction"

Perception of different signals and their integration into appropriate responses is an essential element of the living cell, requiring robust but adaptable biochemical networks. These networks are largely composed of proteins that can interact, move to specific cellular locations, or be modified or degraded. The integration of these events often causes activation or inactivation of transcription factors leading to induction or repression of thousands of genes. We use brassinosteroid signaling as a model system to address the question how specificity and integration is achieved at the cellular level. Our previous research revealed that brassinosteroid signal transduction pathway shares signaling components with the signaling pathway controlling stomatal development in the leaf epidermis. We use combination of proteomics, forward genetics, and visualization techniques to obtain data on the mechanisms that ensure specificity in this crosstalk. We show that the incorporation of shared components into distinct macromolecular complexes through scaffolding molecules ensures their localization to different cellular compartments to provide specificity.
