"Transcriptomic and epigenetic regulation and multi-omics prediction of deep root development in crops"

In the future, crop plants will likely face more severe drought periods during the growing season. It is therefore necessary to identify germplasm resilient to drought for sustainable intensification of agriculture. New breeding strategies are needed in order to develop high yielding varieties that meet these requirements. A key aspect of this is the development of crops with deeper roots. 

The RadiMax facility provides a state-of-the-art phenotyping facility for large-scale screening and image-based analysis of root traits. A total of 74 spring barley lines and 300 perennial ryegrass populations, mainly material from Danish breeding programs, were tested in the RadiMax facility  in 2017. The transcriptomic and epigenetic responses to drought stress and root development were studied. Gene co-expression network analysis allowed for the identification of regulatory networks involved in root development and drought response. Multi-OMICS prediction models integrating SNP markers, transcriptomic and epigenetic data were developed, and used to predict drought response and root development.

The project provides new knowledge about complex traits, e.g. drought adaptation and root development, and a detailed understanding of the epigenome as a potent source of plasticity for crops.
